A SHOPLIFTER who racially abused and assaulted two men who stopped him stealing yoghurts has been jailed.

Richard Scoon, of no fixed address, was caught on CCTV trying to leave Sainsbury’s on Market Street in Huddersfield with the two 90p products stuffed in his coat on March 23.

He became abusive and aggressive when security guard Scott Field stopped him at the exit, Huddersfield magistrates were told.

Ashraf Mohammad, prosecuting, said: “He shouted, ‘Don’t you know who I am? I will come back for you, you white b*****d.”

He then pushed another colleague, Ken Giles, to the floor when he tried to block his path. Mr Giles needed hospital treatment for an arm injury.

Police arrived and Scoon, 35, was arrested.

The defendant refused to turn up for his trial yesterday. He was found guilty in his absence of theft, common assault, racially aggravated threatening behaviour and failing to comply with a drugs test.

He was also found guilty of two separate offences of possessing a kitchen knife and public disorder at Huddersfield Railway Station on February 11.

Scoon was jailed for a total of 28 weeks. He has already been in custody for 11 weeks on remand for the offences.
