YOU would not believe what these youngsters could do with a ball of wool.

For they put it in the trees around a day centre ... and that’s no yarn.

The event organised by pupils from All Saints Catholic College and people from Sundale House day centre at Keldregate in Bradley was to promote Bobble Day on Friday February 10.

This is an awareness and fundraising day highlighting the needless suffering and unnecessary deaths among older people due to the cold.

In yesterday’s stunt, Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees decided to spread a bit of warmth and colour by ‘yarn bombing’ their day centre with help from the pupils. This meant they covered trees, a bench and even a zimmer frame in wool.

Day centre manager Liz Allen said “We are really happy to take part in Bobble Day and to involve the young people to help highlight the problems suffered by older people during the cold winter months.

“Although taking part should be fun, the day marks the shocking fact that during the winter more than three older people die needlessly every day in Calderdale and Kirklees as a result of the cold and dozens more are admitted to hospital.”

People can support the day by buying a fluffy bobble from any Age UK shop or office.

People can also hold their own ‘Wear your Winter Woolly’ day and donate £2 to Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees to wear their best, brightest or funkiest woollies for the day.

Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees offices will also be open as usual to offer information and advice about how to stay warm this winter, how to use energy more efficiently to save money and to check they are claiming all the benefits to which they are entitled.

People can find their local office by logging on to the website or calling 01484 535994.
