Salvation Army members have set themselves a towering challenge for the community.

The church is aiming to collect 2,000 tins of food to help vulnerable families.

The ‘Tin Tower Challenge’ comes hot on the heels of an ‘incredible’ response to a recent appeal for help for refugees.

The church has just launched its latest initiative asking people to drop items off at its Huddersfield base and create a ‘tower of tins’.

Captain Chris Lee said: “After the overwhelming response to our refugee appeal we received harvest-linked donations from local schools and from within the church and currently have around 150 tins.

“We are aware of the increasing number of vulnerable families in the area and have decided to set a target to collect 2,000 tins which will build a very large ‘tin tower’.

“Working with other agencies we will distribute this food to the most needy – including refugee families.

“People have been giving things like tinned tomatoes, tuna and soup. All items with a good shelf life. The response has been better than we hoped for. Quite incredible.”

Cpt Lee added: “The need is not going to go away. Two thousand tins sounds like a lot, but over the winter they will go.”

Anyone who wants to donate, should take tins to the church centre in New Hey Road between 10am and 12noon Tuesdays and Fridays.
