FOUR Samaritans have been acknowledged after giving service totalling more than 100 years to people in crisis.

Volunteers Brian, Margaret, Pamela and David were presented with long service awards after each clocked up more than 25 years with the organisation.

Huddersfield Samaritans was set up in 1953 by a group of people in Lepton.

It now has a 24-hour telephone help-line staffed by 80 volunteers, based at offices in New North Parade, just outside the town centre.

The chairman, Pauline, said volunteers came from all walks of life to help others experiencing some kind of trauma.

"We have got young people, elderly people, people who are busy working, retired people, students. We have a cross-section of society.

"Many people say they want to contribute to society."
