HRI staff make sure of merry Christmas for youngsters

THEY'RE determined to make it a Happy Christmas for children in hospital.

Staff at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary are pulling out all the stops to ensure youngsters have a great time. And they are being helped by people from across the town.

Kind-hearted regulars at local pubs brought Christmas cheer to patients in the children's ward yesterday.

Drinkers at The Sovereign pub on Penistone Road, Shepley, and The Foxglove at Kirkburton have donated gifts.

Shepley landlord Matthew Hoyle runs a Giving Tree appeal. He places stars describing toys on a tree outside the pub. Regulars are asked to choose a star and buy the item listed on it.

The gifts are returned to The Sovereign, where Matthew and his staff wrap them.

Matthew visited the children's ward to distribute the gifts to children who will be in hospital over Christmas.

He said: "We do this every year and it is always appreciated, especially by the children."

And staff at Perrys motor dealership in Huddersfield organised a visit from Santa to hand out presents. Kate Cooper, marketing executive, said: "This is a lovely way for Perrys to share a bit of Christmas magic."

Janette Powell, matron of paediatrics, said: "This was a fantastic way to help the kids get in the mood for Christmas.

"The prospect of spending Christmas away from home can be a bit daunting but this has helped lift spirits."

Staff plan a variety of treats. They've already enjoyed a party, disco and a brass band concert. And there will be presents, toys and games galore on Christmas Day - as well as a special visitor in red!
