A COUNCILLOR has defended moving police officers to a Portakabin.

Lindley Neighbourhood Policing Team moved after Oakes police station closed.

The officers are now based in Sykes Mill, opposite Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The Portakabin has no phones or computers and is not open to the public.

Lindley Lib Dem Clr Christine Stanfield criticised the office as a “sardine can”.

But Lindley Conservative Clr Tony Brice defended the move.

He said: “We looked at various other sites but none of them was suitable. The Portakabin is not the best solution, but it’s a last resort.

“I’m in favour of it because it keeps the police in Lindley. There was talk that they would have to sign on for work in the town centre and then come up to Lindley.

“At least this way the bobbies stay in the ward.”

Clr Brice added: “I understand that phones are being installed in the Portakabin.”
