An Asian couple in their 50s were threatened in their own home by a gang who stole gold jewellery.

Police say three or four suspects forced a wooden panel on the back door of their home in Falcon Road, Savile Town, just after 9pm.

Det Insp George Bardell, of Kirklees CID, said the hooded white men, who spoke with a local accent, threatened the couple and demanded cash before escaping with a quantity of jewellery.

He said: “The householders were shaken up but were unhurt.

“Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area from 8.30pm to 9.30pm should get in touch with Kirklees CID.

“It is believed they will have used a vehicle so anyone seen acting suspiciously or driving around should get in touch.”

Mr Bardell said police would be patrolling the area on Sunday afternoon to reassure residents.

In November police warned the Asian community not to turn “vigilante” after growing fears about violent robbers targeting families for gold.

Asian communities in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury and Batley said they felt under siege after at least five reported raids on homes. In one, a couple in their 80s were threatened and robbed in Savile Town.

In the most serious incident a driver seen acting suspiciously ploughed into people in Charles Street, Ravensthorpe, and abandoned his car and fled on foot.
