COUNCILLORS last night refused permission to demolish a Victorian building.

Planners voted against the proposal to knock down St George’s Working Men’s Club in Scholes to make way for 12 sheltered residential apartments for older people.

The three-storey building would have replaced the dilapidated club, which was built in 1898.

But Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee voted six to three against the proposal at Huddersfield Town Hall yesterday.

Scholes resident Richard Mosley told councillors that the new building would be “out of keeping with the surrounding area”.

Fellow villager Steve Collins said: “The core of the building has real Last of the Summer Wine character”.
