A DEWSBURY school has been severely damaged after a huge fire.

The blaze broke out at Pentland County Infant School, at Savile Town, at 1am yesterday morning.

Fifteen fire crews were called to the scene from stations all over West Yorkshire, including Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Brighouse.

Firefighters managed to contain the flames, but about a third of the school building has been destroyed.

The firefighters spent about eight hours at the school, on Pentland Road, and fire investigation officers and police are now looking into the cause of the blaze.

At the height of the fire about 90 firefighters with 15 service engines were tackling the flames.

Some of the firefighters had to use breathing equipment.
