PLANS to extend an Elland school nursery into a recreation ground have met with opposition from residents.

Calderdale Councillors are set to discuss the expansion scheme at Elland Junior and Infant School next week.

Sited on the edge of the town centre in Westgate, the school overlooks the ground.

The two-storey extension would project 54ft into the public space.

However, Sport England have no objections to the proposal as it is on land incapable of forming part of a playing pitch.

The section earmarked for the nursery provides no formal sporting element.

A nearby playground and pitches would remain unaffected.

Ten letters and a petition of 111 names objecting to the proposals have been received by the council.

Concerns over privacy, increase in traffic and the loss of a playing field have all been highlighted by those resisting the scheme.

Officers are recommending the proposals be permitted at Calderdale Council's planning committee next Tuesday.
