THEY are on the final countdown at Moorlands School.

In just four weeks staff and pupils at Huddersfield’s biggest primary school will be on the move, but not very far.

Their gleaming new school at Mount, which has been under construction for 12 months, will officially open on June 9.

And to mark the momentous event children and staff yesterday buried a time capsule in the grounds.

A special plaque, with instructions to dig up the capsule in 2058, will be put outside the door of the new school.

The capsule contained the names and photos of all the 605 children on the roll, along with all the staff and teachers.

There was also a copy of the Examiner, a school dinner menu and a short history of the school, which was formed from the two former primary schools in Outlane.

Deputy head Janet Thornton said: “It was an exciting day with the children burying the time capsule in the school grounds.

“Some of the Year 6 children who have been involved had written their memories of Moorlands and those, too, went in the capsule.

“The new school is looking really good. The builders are now fitting the cupboards, blinds and carpets.

“It gets handed over at the beginning of June.

“The school will be closed for an extra week at Spring Bank to allow the teachers and staff the chance to move all their work across and we then start with lessons on June 9.

“It will be great. The current school is cramped, especially with hundreds of boxes packed ready to move.

“The children have been great, considering they have lost part of their play area because of the work.”
