SPORTS-MAD children at a village school kicked off summer with a new games pitch.

Youngsters at Meltham Moor Primary School celebrated the opening of their multi-use sports court with a sporting spectacular.

Head teacher Mike Whitfield said the court

would make a tremendous difference to the quality of physical education and games teaching at the school, as well as making playtimes much more active and sport based.

The facility is larger than a full-size netball court and is surrounded by a high rebound fence.

The new court was opened by 1500 metres runner Anthony Whiteman, who has represented Great Britain in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

Mr Whitfield added: "The challenge for the children was to be involved in as much sport as possible from 8am to 5pm.

"With the help of Brenda Hilton and Matthew Haigh, of the Pennine Sports Partnership, a wide variety of coaches were at the school all day, leading many sessions."

Mr Whiteman, who won bronze at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, led a special coaching session for talented students from local high schools and Meltham Moor. He also answered questions in a special session with children from the school.

Children were sponsored to play as much sport as they could. Half the money raised will be spent on new sports equipment and half will be given to Get Kids Going, a charity providing specialist equipment such as wheelchairs to help to get disabled young people involved in sport.

The new court was paid for by the Healthy Schools scheme and a Government grant.
