DELIGHTED youngsters have won an award for their efforts at entertaining old people.

The gospel choir at Beech Primary School, Golcar, regularly performs for the elderly.

Now, the singers have been handed a top prize by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and the Kirklees Federation of Tenants' and Residents' Associations.

The choir won the children and young people's section in the second Kevin Jordan Awards, named after a tenants' campaigner from Birstall who died in 2003 at the age of 70.

Recognition for the gospel choir came in an Oscars-style night at Batley Variety Club.

The Beech School choir performed Light a Candle, Lovely Day and Lean on Me as a tribute to Mr Jordan's widow, Doris, who died this month.

Runners-up in the children and young people's section were Cleckheaton Junior Football Club and Holme Park and Bishops Court Creative Arts Project at Berry Brow.

The children and young people's environment award went to Westborough Eco-Warriors, for work in the Dewsbury school's grounds.

Runners-up were the Cowersley Crew and the Brooklyn Rangers.

The Deercroft group at Salendine Nook won the award for the tenants' association that has made the most positive contribution to its community.

Members have built their own garden and organise regular activities there in the summer.

Runners-up were the Botham Hall and Trees Association at Milnsbridge.

Stuart Gilleard won the Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing Staff Award for over 25 years' service to Honley Scouts. He was given £100 for the charity of his choice.
