A HUDDERSFIELD junior school is the first in Kirklees to achieve a top standard for sport.

Dalton Junior School has been granted the Active Mark Gold Standard.

The standard, from Sport England, rewards schools which show outstanding commitment to PE.

Head teacher Stephen Englefield said: "To achieve this award we had to demonstrate that we offer a well-balanced physical education programme. We strive to ensure that physical activity has a high profile throughout the school."

Every class does physical education, but out of school hours football, netball, gymnastics, table tennis and other games are on offer.

The girls' football team was the best in both Huddersfield and Kirklees last year, while the boys were Huddersfield champions.

The main PE teacher, Lesley Brook, and pupils are seen with the letter telling the school it has achieved the award.
