STREETS will be lined with lanterns in Thornhill this week.

Two schools are joining forces for the event on Thursday called Lantern Streets.

Thornhill Junior and Infant School and Overthorpe Church of England Junior, Infant and Nursery School are providing the entertainment.

Pupils from both schools will line the streets between the two primary schools with lanterns in the shapes of buses, buildings and houses, focusing on the roads where they live to make up Lantern Streets.

The evening starts at 6pm with the school steel band playing at Thornhill Junior and Infants and then a procession through the illuminated streets to Overthorpe. There the school Morris dancers and street band will take over the entertainment.

Lantern Streets follows the success of the Tree Lights parade which was held last year by the Thornhill Schools.

The annual event is to celebrate and promote community using the area’s main primary schools.

Kirklees cabinet member for culture Clr Mary Harkin said: “It’s great to see these local schools and families in the community working together to help stage this event.”
