THIS week and next we take a look at the sporting achievements of Huddersfield’s youngsters.
Many of these took place in the context of school sports days, inter-school competitions and demonstrations of prowess at the popular Summer Entertainments in Greenhead Park.
All the usual sports are here – football, cricket, rounders and swimming.
Next week comes with the addition of the Olympic athletics ethos – shot-putting, cycling, sprinting, discus-hurling, high-jumping and hurdling.
Schools have always held to theRoman satirist Juvenal’s dictum of mens sana in corpore sano meaning a healthy mind in a healthy body and it would be a rare school that neglected physical activity in its aim to educate and develop its young people.
