SCHOOLCHILDREN will open an outdoor gym and canoe weir in Huddersfield next week.

Kirklees Council has invested nearly £270,000 to create exercising opportunities in the Leeds Road area.

A weir for canoes has been built on the River Colne and 14 pieces of outdoor gym equipment has been installed at Leeds Road Sports Complex.

Pupils from Netherhall Learning Campus and Fartown High School will officially unveil the new equipment.

The Mayor of Kirklees will also attend the event at 2.45pm on Thursday.

SITA Landfill Trust has contributed £50,000 to the plan while the Big Lottery Fund has donated £2,000.

Other developments include:

The closure of the non-residential part of Kilner Bank to create a quiet, traffic-free area for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders

The creation of the Riddings Woodland footpath between Cherry Nook Road and the Birkby-Bradley Greenway

The installation of the Kilner Bank Heathland Trail, which will be completed by August.ŠThis will involve the repair and upgrade of the route between Rawthorpe and the Galpharm Stadium.
