SEVEN-year-old Freya Shaw benefits from the Examiner’s Schools Collect For Cash every day of her school life.

For the happy youngster uses specialist equipment bought for her by Lindley Infants School which was the competition’s overall winner last year, scooping £2,000. This was added to money from Kirklees Council to pay for the camera linked to a laptop computer and small joystick.

Freya – who has severe eyesight problems – has now moved up to Lindley Junior School and uses the Magnalink CCTV system every day.

All she has to do is point a camera anywhere in the classroom and the image is magnified onto a screen right in front of her.

It means she can even see the facial expressions of her class teacher, Mrs Amy King, and the camera can also be pointed down to her maths and English books so sums and writing are massively magnified right in front of her.

She used a pair of binoculars until she got the state-of-the-art equipment.

Freya – who lives in Edgerton with parents Stacey and Andrew and 11-year-old brother, Harvey – said: “I can zoom in and out and see anything straight away. I even zoom in on my friends when they’re talking to me so I can see their faces.”

Mrs King said: “It’s a fabulous piece of equipment and so easy to use. It instantly magnifies anything that Freya needs to see. It gives her access to everything in the classroom and it’s all at her fingertips.

“Pupils bring things into the classroom such as swimming and dance trophies to show and tell their classmates. Freya can zoom right in on the trophy or certificate. We can also take the system into the hall when people come into school to give talks.

“This equipment may well help her throughout her school life. It’s absolutely fantastic and all the support staff use it with her.”

Mum Stacey said: “It has made a phenomenal difference. It’s not just a piece of equipment that allows her to read – it acts as a good eye for her.

“She can angle it to whatever she wants to see and it has helped her socially as much as anything because it means she feels included.”
