IT was a Huddersfield version of TV’s Wacky Races.

And schools and colleges from across the region entered the contest with all the enthusiasm of a Dick Dastardly or Penelope Pitstop.

In the end, pupils from Kirkburton Middle School pedalled to victory in a wacky race outside the John Smith's Stadium.

Their entry had a familiar look as it resembled one of the classic David Brown tractors, manufactured at Meltham.

The school was competing in the Huddersfield Town Go-Kart Challenge.

The competition challenged high schools from Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield to design a pedal-powered car and race it on a track outside the stadium.

The contest was split into various categories including design presentation folder, aesthetics, environmental, circuit racing, obstacle course and manoeuvrability categories.

Schools picked up extra points for using recycled materials and incorporating a Yorkshire theme.

While Kirkburton’s kart, based on a David Brown tractor, won only the aesthetics category outright, the school’s effort was judged to be the best overall.

Kirkburton Middle School design and technology teacher, Sue Charlesworth, said: “We were surprised and elated to win because we had only won one of the categories so we didn’t expect to win overall.”

The school won a large trophy and VIP tickets to a Huddersfield Town match, including lunch with the directors.

The school’s design will also be paraded on the pitch at half-time.

Other category winners were:

Design folder – Wakefield Girls High School

Recycling – Holmfirth High School

Circuit race – Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield;

Manoeuvrability – Queen Elizabeth Grammar School;

Obstacle – Moor End Academy, Crosland Moor.

It was the third time Huddersfield Town has hosted the schools challenge and it is now hoped the partnership can become a firm fixture with schools.
