CHILDREN at a Huddersfield school have been getting back to nature for a potato-growing project.

Pupils at Lindley C of E Infant School were taking part in the British Potato Council's Grow Your Own Potatoes campaign.

It is aimed at teaching children to discover more about the food they eat.

The campaign was launched after a survey revealed that six out of 10 children thought potatoes grew on trees.

Pupils from 420 schools have taken part in the project nationwide. It ended this week.

Once the potatoes at Lindley were lifted the children helped to cook and eat them.

The weight and size of the crop was recorded for the potato council's Britain's Best School Potato Harvest contest.

The school with the best harvest will win a laptop computer and educational materials.

The pupils at Lindley have enjoyed the project so much that they are now growing outdoor potatoes in a small vege- table plot at the school.

Caroline Evans, of the British Potato Council, said: "Learning should be fun and interactive, something I feel we've achieved with the Grow Your Own Potatoes campaign.

"The potato industry is committed to helping children understand more about healthy eating," she added.
