STAR students at All Saints Catholic High School, Bradley Bar, have taken a clutch of GCSE and AS exams a year early.

Eleven pupils of outstanding ability fast-tracked a number of courses, with help from their family and teachers.

Deputy head teacher Mary Nixon said: "When we recognise that a student has the capacity to undertake exam courses in a shorter time, or at an earlier age to their peer group, we encourage them to do so."

She added: "It is an achievement beyond the ordinary. These students and their teachers have much to be proud of."

Mrs Nixon said taking a course in half the time required massive amounts of commitment from pupils.

Teachers took courses during lunch hours and after school.

Five students passed GCSE geography in one year. They were: Joanna Lobaz (A*), Matthew Engwell (A*), Matthew Berry (A), Melanie Flynn (A) and James Shaw (C).

Four took GCSE music after just 12 months: Rosie Hughes (A), Matthew Engwell (B) and Krystina Murphy (C).

Triple award science GCSEs were attained by Mark Hall, Matthew Harris, Ruth Ballard and Helen Dandridge. Matthew also passed his AS Geography and Statistics in Year 11.

Rebecca Goulding has been appointed the student president to lead the sixth form executive this year.

Sally Hall is to start a natural sciences course at Cambridge University, having achieved four grade As at A-Level.

"This achievement represents many years of committed study by Sally and the encouragement and support of her family and teachers," said Mrs Nixon.
