SCHOOLCHILDREN helped shoppers get into the festive spirit when they played at a local supermarket.

Rawthorpe Junior School's Steel Pan Band played carols to customers at the Waterloo branch of Morrisons. They are pictured giving their performance.

Children at the school entered a Christmas card competition, which was judged by store staff. The cards are on display in the supermarket.

The company donated prizes for the winners, which will be presented in a special school assembly.

Caroline Marshall, the school's community development worker said the children really entertained shoppers on the day.

She said: "They absolutely loved it - it's something different than the usual carol singing or orchestra.

"They made a lot of customers smile.

"We're very proud of them - the public got to see how talented our children are."

The band would love to play for the public again and welcomes requests from anyone wanting them to perform.
