A HUDDERSFIELD charity which helps people with cerebral palsy has opened new premises.

The new base for Scope in Huddersfield was officially opened by Kirklees mayor Clr Barbara Allonby.

The move to 107/109 Wakefield Road, Moldgreen, was needed to allow Scope in Huddersfield to expand its activities.

It was previously located in a business unit at Ray Street Enterprise Centre for three years.

The charity was set up 50 years ago by parents and friends of people with cerebral palsy.

It is affiliated to the national cerebral palsy charity Scope, but operates independently and focuses on Kirklees.

It started off providing social activities for members, including holidays abroad. But in the past five years, its activities have expanded to focus on helping cerebral palsy sufferers live independently.

Scope in Huddersfield also manages Kingsgate Shopmobility, based at the Kingsgate Shopping Centre. Shopmobility loans scooters and wheelchairs seven days a week to disabled people for use in the town centre.

Business development manager Stephanie Mallas said: "We had outgrown the unit at Wray Street.

"We wanted a location we could make our own and where we could hold social events and promotions. We wanted to develop our own identity and activities. Here there is room for expansion in future."

Future services in the pipeline include a Well Being project, which will allow people with cerebral palsy to benefit from treatments such as reflexology and aromatherapy.
