HUNDREDS of scouts have marched through Huddersfield to honour their patron saint.

About 400 young people took part in the St George’s Day procession from Greenhead Park to Huddersfield Parish Church yesterday afternoon.

Canon Catherine Ogle, the vicar of Huddersfield, took part in an hour-long service after the parade.

She said: “It was a really enjoyable service but it was also a serious event where all the beavers and scouts renewed their promises.”

“The young people sang hymns and the national anthem and then they raised a banner into the rafters which was really nice.”

Canon Ogle added: “We commemorated St George, who overcame the evil of the dragon and reflected on the things we have to overcome in our lives.”

Beavers and scouts from across West and South Yorkshire took part in the service, which was led by Rev Dr Anna Wallace.

They then marched to Huddersfield Library where the Mayor of Kirklees Clr Karam Hussain told them how much he valued the scouting movement.
