A NEW public sculpture will be officially launched at Oakwell Hall Country Park later this month.

The steel sculpture Fiddlehead and Fernblades stands over six metres tall and takes pride of place on Colliery Field, land that was reclaimed from the former Gomersal Colliery.

The launch will be on Sunday October 19 at 1.30pm.

Its fern leaf design is inspired by the coal-forming carboniferous ferns that grew there millions of years ago and by their present day descendants that still grow there today.

It has been designed by Manchester artist Adrian Moakes.

The sculpture is the result of a community project managed by Loca, the arts and regeneration agency of Kirklees Council.
