THE hunt is on to find Huddersfield’s best amateur chef.

And the winner will be a star of this year’s Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

Local foodies are being invited to enter the competition to come up with a recipe for a lazy breakfast meal for two.

And to support the Live Love Local initiative, they must buy as many of their ingredients from Kirklees Markets as possible.

Festival organiser Cathy Burger said: “This competition is a fantastic way for keen cooks to get themselves and their food noticed, not only by the public, but in front of experts in the food industry.”

The deadline for sending in recipes is Friday, July 30, and contestants must be free to take part in the semi-finals on Saturday August 7, in the Queensgate Market demonstration zone as well as the final which will be on the last day of the Food and Drink Festival on Sunday August 15.

Clr Peter McBride, Kirklees cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The markets in Kirklees have some amazing local produce so people should have no problems finding meat, fish or fruit to create their winning recipe.

“Many chefs these days are concerned about where their produce comes from, so as part of the council’s commitment to local food, the markets have started a Live Love Local campaign.”

The winner will be crowned Festival Chef of the Year and will be given a day’s training with a local chef, receive shopping vouchers and have the opportunity to do a demonstration of their signature dish at the Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival.

All equipment and store cupboard ingredients will be provided by the organisers and the meal for two people must cost no more than £10.
