AGE CONCERN and Specsavers opticians in Huddersfield have joined forces to launch a national search in the UK for Super grans and granddads.
Nominations can be made by anyone who is seven or over to commemorate the special characteristics of an excellent grandparent.
The UK is home to over 14m grandparents, whose childcare costs would total £3.8m.
Specsavers store director Richard Hurdley said: “Grandparents are the nucleus of the family and play a pivotal role in influencing, developing and enriching the lives of all those around them.”
The annual competition, now in its 17th year, is looking for outstanding grandparents with heartwarming anecdotes to tell.
Nominations are also welcome for people who want to enhance the characteristics of a person who isn’t a grandparents, but has played that vital role.
Five finalists will be chosen to attend an all- expenses-paid VIP weekend in London, accompanied by their grandchild.
The national winner of the Grandparent of the Year 2008 title will receive £3,000, plus £750 worth of eyecare and hearing vouchers from Specsavers.
To nominate your grandparent visit Specsavers on Market Street or your nearest Age Concern centre to collect a form.
Alternatively, you can log on to the website www.specsavers.co.uk or www.ageconcern.org.uk
The closing date for entries is Friday, November 30.
