THE search is on for talented and aspiring stage stars for a new musical - including a 100-year-old Moses!

Budding performers of all ages are urged to attend open auditions this afternoon and evening at the Methodist Mission House in Lord Street.

The new musical, themed on the freeing of slaves and the life of Biblical hero Moses, requires a cast of about 30, including nine solo leads.

A wide range of ages are needed, not least because the epic story features the life of Moses from being a teenager, right through to well over 100.

Director Steven Downs hopes for a big turn-out at auditions, because he likes to hold them in groups rather than with individuals.

"I hate that sort of audition where everyone stands in front of a panel of judges.

"I want relaxed workshops where we can all sing and dance together, the more the merrier," he said.

Auditions began yesterday, with some promising youngsters showing their dancing skills, working with choreographer Sharon Clement.

There are two further audition sessions today, at 2pm and 7pm today.

"I really hope we get some nice big groups, including some adult performers," said Mr Downs.

"It's a really exciting project and I can't wait to start rehearsing. But we need to fill the parts!"

Mr Downs, of Flockton, was formerly the head of drama at Shelley College.

Although Moses is central to the story, Mr Downs sees the musical as a celebration of the release of slaves more widely than just the Biblical story.

He said: "Next year is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and I hope to link the show to that."

Opening night should be in March 2007. A venue, and a final title has yet to be confirmed, but the working title is Let My People Go.
