A TOWN centre store launched Christmas trading in style - with a visit by the Mayor of Kirklees.

Clr Margaret Fearnley (second right), accompanied by her consort Barry Fearnley (right), officially opened a new area in Peter's Fashions in King Street, Huddersfield.

Peter Whittle (left), founder and chairman of Peter's, presented a £250 cheque to Clr Fearnley for the mayor's charity appeal. Also pictured is Caroline Whittle, of Peter's.

The store has provided 1,000sq ft of floorspace for womenswear company Jacques Vert to sell its Windsmoor, Planet and Precis range of classical clothing.

Peter's managing director David Whittle said: "The opening coincides with the start of our Christmas trading.

"People seem to be out doing their festive shopping a lot earlier this year.

"Better trading results by big high street names like Marks & Spencer and Debenhams seem to have encouraged people to spend."
