THE importance of wearing a seatbelt will be demonstrated during a police-led operation in Dewsbury.

Shoppers will be able to see the potential dangers of not belting up at Asda supermarket on Mill Street West on Friday, January 14.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will use a seatbelt ‘sledge’, which transports dummies a short distance at about 30mph before coming to a sudden halt.

Steve Fealey, assistant district manager for the fire and rescue service in Kirklees, said: “Seatbelts are provided for a specific reason – to save lives. I’d like to know why people choose not to wear them.”

The demonstration is part of Operation Focus, a week of activities by the police, fire service, Kirklees Council and other agencies to target issues raised by the public.
