A MARSDEN singer with hopes of stardom is appearing on a TV pop talent show.

Serena Sykes, 21, of Boulder Gate, has already appeared on ITV's Pop Idol show - and she will soon be on again.

The show's judges - pop guru Pete Waterman, famously nasty record company boss Simon Cowell, pop star manager Nicki Chapman and DJ Dr Neil Fox - have seen thousands of wannabe singers hoping to be chosen for a recording contract.

Initial auditions were held in Manchester, Glasgow and London, where hopefuls were chosen for future heats.

Serena's first audition at Manchester - where she sang Eva Cassidy's Songbird - saw her plucked from thousands to enter the next round, along with around 100 other hopefuls.

She said:

"It went really well. Simon Cowell was on my side and Nicki Chapman said I had a beautiful voice."

Serena's parents, Karina and Stephen, stayed at home during the audition with her daughter, Kyra, two, but watched her first TV performance.

Serena, who has been singing since she was 14, said: "They think it's fantastic. I got 14 calls from friends within three minutes of the programme being on."

The result of Serena's performance for the second round is due to be aired in the coming weeks. She sang Think Twice, by Celine Dion.

Serena also writes her own music.
