A WEEKEND music festival in Dewsbury has been marred by two assaults.

The Kirklees Council Festival in The Park at Crow Nest Park saw thousands of revellers flock to see the Magic of Motown on Saturday and a host of pop and rock acts yesterday.

The Examiner understands a serious sexual assault occurred in woods in the centre of the park on Saturday night following the Magic of Motown gig.

A section of the woods between the main stage and the second stage remained cordoned off yesterday with police guarding the area.

The area was re-opened later in the afternoon and detectives from the Bradford-based Homicide and Major Enquiries Team are understood to have begun an investigation.

It is not known if anyone has been arrested and no further details of the incident have been released.

Yesterday a man was viciously assaulted in the crowd during the main stage performance of Northern Irish band Ignition.

He was attacked by two men as he watched the gig with his family and friends. A police spokesman said a man had been arrested but the victim had not wished to make a complaint.
