THE ladies of Huddersfield are being called to the start line for the Race for Life.

Organisers of the event which raises thousands for Cancer Research are hoping the town’s women will sign up to don the bright pink T-shirts and face paint for the fun run at Leeds Road Playing Fields on the weekend of July 3 and 4

A team of volunteers gathered in the Kingsgate Centre yesterday to encourage passers by to recruit their family and colleagues.

Race for Life is the country’s largest women-only fundraising event of its kind.

This year organisers are hoping 5,400 will put their best feet forward in a bid to generate £270,000.

Around 700,000 will take part in the event across the country.

In the Yorkshire and the Humber area around 70 people are diagnosed with cancer every day.

Cancer Research’s Imogen Johnson said: “I’m organising the event and a few more around West Yorkshire.

“We’re letting Huddersfield women know that we are open for entries and they can sign up as of now.

“We will have two events at the playing fields, the first on the Saturday, July 3 at 10.30am and 2.30pm the next day.

“Women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes take part in Race for Life.

“They motivate and inspire each other to complete the 5k course.

“Many simply walk round, chatting and having fun but they all share the wonderful atmosphere at the event.

“One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is that more people are beating the disease than ever before.

“Cancer Research UK’s work is at the heart of that progress.”

The Race For Life has grown in popularity in recent years and the Huddersfield events have proved massively successful.
