CAR mechanics have been given the chance to prove they're not rip-off merchants by earning a British Standards Institution Kitemark in a new scheme.

The Automotive Kitemark means garages that meet key industry and customer requirements can display the mark guaranteeing a high level of service.

Currently there is little regulation controlling garages with rip-off car servicing and repairs reported to cost consumers £4bn every year.

Less than half of UK garages belong to a trade association and previous attempts to regulate the industry have all failed.

To earn the Kitemark, garages have their services independently tested by the BSI to ensure they can produce them consistently to a certain standard.
