UNTREATED effluent was escaping under a Mirfield street after a pipe break.

A drain which collects used water from homes to transfer it to the mains broke underneath Hopton Lane in Mirfield yesterday.

Sewage experts shut the road off yesterday at just after 6pm after realising that mucky water from toilets, baths and kitchens was flooding beneath residents' feet.

Hopton Lane is now only open to pedestrians.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman told the Examiner: "Water supply has not been affected.

"We expect to have the situation resolved by Saturday evening.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the carrying out of these repairs."
