POLICE are appealing for help to catch a man who sexually assaulted a woman in Huddersfield town centre.

The 29-year-old woman was walking along New Street towards Chapel Hill after a night out drinking with friends when a man came up behind her and pushed her to the ground.

The man assaulted the woman, who screamed and struggled.

The man then tried to take her bag before snatching a mobile phone from the bag and running off.

The attack happened at about 4.15am on Sunday outside the former Heaven and Hell nightclub.

The woman, who was left shocked by the incident, ran to the police station in Albion Street to report the attack.

Det Con Neil Johnson, of Huddersfield CID, said: “This was a serious incident and we would appeal for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious.

“The attacker may have been picked up by taxi, so we want to hear from drivers who collected a fare in the early hours of Sunday morning.”
