A SEX attacker claimed he was a police officer to trick a 12-year-old girl into his car so he could assault her.

Police have today released an e-fit image of the man who took his victim on a horrifying journey before sexually assaulting her.

The schoolgirl was walking along Batley Road in Alverthorpe, Wakefield, when a car drew up alongside her shortly after 1.20pm on New Year's Eve.

The driver, who was in a silver car - possibly a Peugeot or a Citroen - asked her for directions.

He claimed he was a police officer and asked her to get in the car and show him the way. When she did, he drove her towards Batley.

The vehicle is thought to have travelled along Batley Road on to Wrenthorpe Lane before joining the M1 motorway at junction 41.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "It is believed the girl was then taken to an unknown location in the Leeds area where she was sexually assaulted before being returned to Batley Road.

"The girl is being supported by specially trained officers."

The attacker may have come from anywhere.

He is white, aged about 30 with short dark hair and a fat face.

He wore black trous- ers and a blue or black Berghaus fleece with a white top underneath.
