COMPLAINTS about a firm collecting ground rent from Huddersfield homes will go straight to the top, the town's MP has vowed.

Labour's Barry Sheerman said he would make sure that complaints landed on the desk of the tycoon who owns the firm, London-based Estates and Management.

His comments follow a meeting between Mr Sheerman and Iranian-born Vincent Tchenguiz.

The company has been criticised for charging tenants huge penalty notices for late payment of rents - without first sending out written reminders.

In the Examiner Mr Tchenguiz said there had been a problem after a mailing company failed to send post on time to leaseholders.

But he insisted that the problem had been resolved.

He said Estates and Management had nothing to hide and that it followed correct procedures and operated professionally.

Mr Sheerman said: "I had a bruising discussion with Mr Tchenguiz about the way his company treats people in Huddersfield.

"I suggested that as the owner of a company with 20,000 leaseholders in Huddersfield, he has to take responsibility."

He added: "I think we are getting somewhere.

"Mr Tchenguiz has asked for any complaints to go straight to him.

"I want anyone who has suffered at the hands of this company to contact me."

Mr Sheerman urged leaseholders to send details to him c/o the Labour Party offices in Cross Church Street, Huddersfield.
