YOUNG entrepreneurs have been urged to follow the footsteps of a Huddersfield-born tycoon.

Innocent Smoothies, co-founded by Richard Reed, who grew up in Kirkheaton and attended Batley Grammar School, is among previous winners of the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Now the annual award is open to entries for 2010.

The competition recognises the achievements of the UK’s leading young entrepreneurs – offering up-and-coming business owners aged between 16 and 30 the opportunity for national recognition and a £10,000 boost.

Shell Livewire is one ofBritain’s longest-running youth entrepreneur awards, having been established in 1982. After winning in 2000, Innocent Smoothies has grown from a staff of four to more than 200 and now has a turnover of £128m.

A recent poll by Shell Livewire of its online business community suggests enterprise continues to thrive in the UK – despite the challenging environment.
