SHELLEY has been named Yorkshire's small village of the year.

The Yorkshire Rural Community Council crowned Shelley best village judged on a number of aspects including community groups and the environment.

Ann Priestman, chairman of Shelley Community Association said: "We are delighted, champagne corks have been popping all around the village since we found out.

"Everyone has worked so hard to make sure we won this award. It is an honour for the whole village and all the groups we have."

The award, sponsored by Calor Gas, means Shelley will now compete with other villages in the North of England in the autumn and could go on to battle it out nationally.

The village will be presented with a plaque and small sum of money.
