The schoolboy found bleeding in the street on the way to school this morning has died.

Heroic passers-by rushed to aid a 14-year-old boy who was found on the ground at Southway in Mirfield.

Emergency services were called to a ‘concern for safety’ at 8.47am to the London Park Estate, close to Mirfield Free Grammar.

The road was sealed off while the incident was investigated and West Yorkshire Police has now confirmed the boy has sadly passed away.

A woman who was passing with her son has told how she joined desperate efforts to revive the unconcious youngster .

Police at the scene in Mirfield

Margaret Burton joined another woman and two school boys who gave first aid to try and save his life.

She said: ”We were taking my son to college and I was going to work and I saw a group of lads and at first I thought there was fighting but then as I got closer I could see it was a boy on the pavement with an adult around him.

“I said to my husband ‘let’s pull up and see if we can help’.

“As I got to the boy it was obvious he wasn’t breathing.

“I started doing CPR and there was a lady on the phone to the ambulance service who told us we needed to go and get a defibrillator from the church.”

Margaret said two schoolboys then ran to nearby St Andrew’s Church and raced back to them with the medical equipment.

They were talked through the procedure by a 999 operator and continued CPR until the paramedics arrived and took over.

Margaret praised the woman who was first on the scene who gave mouth-to-mouth and the schoolboys who she said were “very brave”.

She added: ”Something just takes over and you do everything you can to help in that situation.

“I just went into ‘help this child mode’ and it’s not until after it hits you.

“I’d just like to think that if my son was on the floor someone would help him.”

Detectives are investigating the nature of the incident and how the boy came by his injuries which were described as ‘serious’.

Det Insp Shaf Rehman of Kirklees CID said: “Officers are supporting the family at this difficult time and our enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

“At this stage we are treating the death as unexplained but do not currently believe there to be any suspicious circumstances.

“A post mortem is due to take place.”

A police cordon at the junctions of Southway and Eastway was lifted earlier this afternoon.
