SHOTS were fired in a night attack on a Huddersfield street.

Shocked residents were woken up in Crosland Moor by what one described as several shots early yesterday.

And one person believes that there may even have been an exchange of gunfire.

The shots were fired at around 3am on Walpole Road.

Police were quickly on the scene and sealed the road off. It remained closed most of yesterday while police forensics experts searched for any evidence.

One resident, who lives nearby but asked not to be named, said: “I heard a couple of shots and then around five more. Then there was the sound of a lot of guys yelling before a car screeched off.’’

At least one of the bullets hit a terraced house on Walpole Road.

The next door neighbour – who would only give his name as Jock – said: “There was a commotion going on just before 3am and the next thing I knew there were police cars all down the street.

“It could even have been an exchange of fire and one bullet hit the house next to me.

“I’ve lived here for 20 years and this has come completely out of the blue.’’

A couple with children live at the house next to Jock.

A woman who lives opposite and has been a resident on the Walpole estate for more than 30 years said: “I was asleep at the time, but was woken by two loud bangs and then a lot of police came quickly.

“I have lived here a long time and it’s the first time I can recall shots being fired in the street.’’

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We responded to reports that shots had been discharged in the street.

“No-one has been hurt and no arrests have been made so far. Inquiries are ongoing.’’
