This shocking image shows the moment a masked gunman takes aim at his victim in a residential street.

Detectives investigating the shooting - which left a man badly injured - have today released the CCTV image as officers continued to hunt the suspect.

The image appears to show a man in a mask pointing a long barrelled firearm towards a hunched figure.

The incident happened at around 4.40am yesterday (Friday) on Arnold Street, Birkby.

Police said the victim, a 32-year-old man, is currently in a stable condition in hospital with serious leg injuries.

The incident is being treated as a targeted attack and West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquires Team is leading the investigation.

The image shows the suspect wearing what appears to be a black ski mask, grey tracksuit bottoms and a distinctive blue top with a white motif down the arms.

Det Insp Emma Winfield said: “We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident or anyone who may have seen a man previously acting suspiciously in the area wearing similar clothing.

“We also believe the suspect left the scene in a small blue van and would ask for anyone who may have seen this vehicle to contact us.

“This is clearly a very serious incident and reassurance patrols will continue in the area while our investigation is progressing.”

Yesterday witnesses told the Examiner that a blue Citroen had been spotted moments before the shooting.

One witness said the victim had lost a lot of blood before he was taken to hospital.

A local taxi driver, Majid Ali, 44, said he had heard shots in the street at 4.43am. Residents described hearing the victim screaming. Residents gave first aid to the victim as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Later on armed police attended Wheathouse Road in Birkby as part of their investigations into the shooting. Police said their presence on Wheathouse Road was in relation to the firearms discharge on Arnold Street.
