IT seems a lot of people in Huddersfield are feeling loved up and in the mood for Valentine’s Day this year.

There’s been a mad rush for cards and gifts in the last days before the big event.

Shopworkers at Clinton Cards in the Kingsgate Centre in Huddersfield were not so much swept off their feet but rushed off their feet, as couples dashed out to buy their Valentine’s cards and gifts.

Shopworker Jenna Hinchcliffe, 19, said: “It’s like any special national occasion.

“Everyone’s in high spirits and the shop’s always very busy, especially the day before.”

Colleague Cheryl Moreton, 33, said: “It’s probably the second busiest holiday after Christmas.

“We find it’s a big rush on the day before with men running in to pick up their cards at the last minute.”

In a survey conducted by chocolate firm Rolo, it was revealed that 80% of Brits rated the importance of little gestures throughout the year over one-off grand gestures on Valentine’s Day.

Despite that over half of the women surveyed said they’d be upset if their partner forgot about Valentine’s Day all together.

But the survey comes on the back of other research which shows that fewer people are getting married than at any time in more than 100 years.

A total of 232,990 couples tied the knot in the UK in 2008, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed.

That is down from 235,370 in 2007 and the lowest total since 1895.

The marriage rate, which is calculated by the number of marriages per head of population, fell to its lowest level since records began in 1862, the ONS said.
