BUSINESSES in Huddersfield have lent their support to a campaign for a crossing on a busy road.

Several shops near the Lockwood Bar crossroads, in Lockwood, have petitions available for people to sign.

They demand pedestrian crossing facilities on all four `arms' of the crossroads, which carry traffic to Huddersfield, Meltham, Holmfirth and Crosland Moor.

Chicago Pizza takeaway, the post office, an opticians and a hairdressers near the crossroads all have copies of the petitions which have been drawn up by Lockwood resident Phil Nicholas.

Mr Nicholas, of Back Stanley Street, is campaigning for the council to look again at the safety of the road and problems pedestrians have in crossing it at peak times.

Mr Nicholas cited the plight of an elderly couple from Honley, who are both blind.

Harold and Nelly Rhodes, of Trinity Court, travel into Lockwood every Monday to attend lunch at the Baptist Church.

Their bus stops on the church side of the Lockwood Road, but when they leave church, the bus home to Honley leaves from the opposite side of the road.

The couple are too afraid to tackle the road alone.

They get on a bus on the church side of the road and travel into Huddersfield bus station and ask for a bus back to Honley.

This adds 45 minutes on to their journey.

Mr Nicholas said: "It is causing them a nightmare."

He said the road was dangerous.

Two arms of the junction already have crossings, but Kirklees Council had previously stated no additional crossings could be put in because it would affect the operation of the junction.

Surveys carried out by the council had been inconclusive in finding the best crossing point for pedestrians.

Mr Nicholas said: "I have spent time working on a solution I think will work and I will present this to the council when I hand in the petitions after Christmas."
