A DISUSED mill in Birkby could be converted into shops.

Norfolk-based Azam Bros Ltd wants to transform Flinder’s Mill off St John’s Road into a continental grocery store and clothes boutique.

The application has been submitted to Kirklees Council’s planning officers.

The vacant site, in a conservation area, has had a variety of uses over the years.

It was originally used as a corn mill, before being occupied by a decorator’s merchants, then used for storage, distribution and servicing cars.

The proposed development would include an open plan shop floor with onsite butcher, toilets and storage areas and first-floor clothing boutique with accommodation.

The building’s ‘facelift’ would include cleaning and repointing the brickwork, relaying the pitched roofs using original slates and reinstating the boarded up windows and doors.

‘Contemporary but sympathetic’ extensions would also be added to extend the floor space.

The store would be accessed from St John’s Road and include 18 spaces for cars and cycle parking.

The two-storey red brick mill is on land next to shops and terraced houses.

Public consultation ends on July 23 when planning officers will consider the application.
