A supermarket giant is helping a Huddersfield charity to feed those in crisis.
The Welcome Centre and Huddersfield’s Methodist Mission will now be up to £4,000 better off over the next year after Sainsbury’s Shorehead store launched their new scheme to donate up to 20 carrier bags of fresh bread each week which will be given to those using the charity’s services.
Freshly-baked bread and artisan loaves could now be among the items being given to the Lord Street-based food bank team who will distribute them in their twice weekly food parcel drop-ins and will also be used in the low cost meals given out at the neighbouring Mission cafe.
It is a great boost to the Lord Street-based centres which this year has seen the number of people using the food bank service rocket from 8,600 to almost 10,000.
Welcome Centre staff member Emma Greenough said: “It’s great to begin the partnership and we’re really thankful to Sainsbury’s for agreeing to make the donations.
“Now we will be able to give more good quality, fresh bread to those in need and increase the amount we are able to give each client.
“Up until now we only had enough bread to give each person who uses the food bank one loaf, regardless of how big their family is.
“And in the past 10 years we’ve seen such an increase in the demand for the service we have not only had to move to bigger premises but have had to really consider how we are going to meet the increasing costs we are faced with.”
The Welcome Centre provides vital essentials for people in severe need such as toiletries, clothes, pet food and bedding and each food parcel contains bread along with a variety of dried, tinned and fresh food designed to last one week.
Emma, said: “More and more people will face impossible choices between eating and heating, feeding their children or paying the rent over the next year.
“We are a small, independent charity that relies on cash and goods donations.
“A single food parcel costs the Welcome Centre £10 so we are always looking for new supporters. ”
Anyone who would like to donate money or food to the Welcome Centre food bank can do so by dropping into the centre in between Monday and Friday from 10 to 4pm and can arrange for a delivery pick-up by calling Emma on 01484 515086.
