It is a rivalry going way back for Huddersfield Town fans.

But it seems competition between our neighbouring big city Leeds goes further than football.

A retired Kirklees gardener has snapped pictures of the town centre’s withered-looking flower baskets, and it seems Leeds’ blooming cascades in City Square have put us to shame.

Pete Fawcett has criticised the council for letting flowers die in the heat, and claims they haven’t been watered for weeks.

He said: “I inspected the planters last Friday and found them to be totally dry.

“So I went back a few nights later and found the same planters to be still dry and not watered.

“The planters in King Street were unaffected, but there seems to have been no inspections done by Kirklees Council.”

Cleckheaton resident Pete, who worked for the council for 32 years, added: “The Leeds planters are watered by proper gardeners.

“It’s all very well buying in plants, but if they are not looked after then what’s the point?

Triumphant plants adorning Leeds City Centre put Huddersfield to shame

“It’s penny wise and pound foolish by Kirklees Council.”

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “The watering of the planters and hanging baskets is carried out by a contractor, they are watered on a weekly basis or more frequently in dry spells.

“We carry out frequent quality inspections and have had no issues to date, however we will investigate this specific issue further to ensure the high quality of planting within our town centre.”
