A POPULAR dog show has been cancelled due to fears of a fuel crisis.

The annual Greyhound Gathering and Dog Show has been held at Wilshaw, near Holmfirth, for years.

However, this year organisers have decided to cancel the event - scheduled for October 8 - in case the current protests over fuel prices lead to a petrol shortage.

Organiser Carol Jones said: "Cancellation of the event seems the safer option.

"It is impossible to know how long the panic buying of fuel may continue. As we have visitors to the gathering from far away, as well as locally, transport problems might put people off.

"It would be ridiculous to start advertising an event which could well fail.

"We are sorry if visitors are disappointed."

Mrs Jones organises the dog show for organisation Greyhound 2000, which collects money for greyhound rescue charities.

She said although the event was off, people could still help Greyhound 2000 by buying goods - such as Christmas cards, books, glass and china - from the organisation's shop on Huddersfield Road in Meltham.

The shop - called Arts And Cards For Greyhound Rescue - is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1pm to 6.30pm.

People can also buy cards via mail order from Mrs Jones by writing to her at 3, Clarke Lane, Meltham, Holmfirth, HD9 4ND.
