AN exhibition recalling Huddersfield's textile past has gone on show in the town.
The exhibition, including samples of fabrics, evocative old photographs and historic documents, has been assembled as part of Huddersfield Textile Society's centenary celebrations.
The exhibition, put together by society chairman Gerald Stead and his wife, Dorothy, is being staged at the Textile Centre of Excellence at Red Doles Lane, off Leeds Road.
The items on display include a photograph dating from the late 1930s showing the Colne Valley mills in their heyday.
The photograph - depicting the mills of Milnsbridge and Longwood at night on full production and ablaze with lights - was taken from Manchester Road and features John Crowther's Union Mills in the foreground.
Other items include medals presented by the textile society to successful students and medals won by firms at international exhibitions.
The society takes its starting point from 1903 - although there was an abortive attempt to form a society in 1892.
The exhibition includes a ledger and a copy of the textile society's first journal, both dating from 1892 .
This society foundered initially because members feared that sharing information with others in the industry would expose their commercial secrets.
Other items include pattern books and examples of fabrics, yarns and finished cloth.
There is also a section on Moorhouse & Brook, which was founded in 1903 - the same year as the textile society.
The exhibits include a picture of the firm's founding partner, Fred Moorhouse.
Mr Stead said: "We began pulling the exhibition together in June.
"We have had companies digging through their archives. It has involved a lot of work."
The exhibition, which is free, will run until December 5.
Society members will look to the past at their next meeting on December 1 at the textile centre when films relating to Linthwaite firms Taylor Livesey & Co and George Mallinson and Sons Ltd will be shown.
The films, dating from about 50 years ago, will be shown by past presidents Charles Taylor, a former managing director of Taylor Livesey & Co, and Ian Baxter.
